Taylor asks a guard for help.
In the county jail, Taylor dreams that Phoebe needs her. She wakes from the dream and frantically calls for a guard. When the guard arrives, Taylor explains that she needs to check on her daughter, but the guard points out that the phones are shut down for the night. Taylor asks to borrow the guard's cell phone, even if only for a minute, to call Phoebe. The guard asks Taylor if she recalls offering psychiatric advice on a radio talk show some years ago. Taylor remembers that, so the guard recalls a time when a woman called in, crying after finding out that her son was gay. Taylor had advised that woman not to hate her son. The guard tells Taylor that she was that woman. Since Taylor helped her that day, she agrees to let Taylor use her cell phone, although she warns that the signal might be weak. Taylor thanks her.

Shane tries to reassure Phoebe.
Outside Taylor's house, Phoebe pulls away from Shane. Shane tells her to relax. He feels like she's as scared of him now as she was the night of Darla's death, even though she knows he's her friend now. Phoebe says she's scared when he acts like he doesn't hear her. Shane apologizes and tells her that he's going to share a secret with her; he admits that he sometimes get scared, too, like he did around all the cops and lawyers at the courthouse. He assures Phoebe that he'll do anything he can to help her mom and asks if they're still friends. She says that they are. Phoebe turns to go inside, but Shane reaches out to her; she asks what he's doing and pulls away just as Harry arrives. "You wouldn't want anything else to happen to that hand," Harry says, moving Shane's hand away from Phoebe. Harry explains that Storm is up at the house to talk to both Phoebe and Shane about Taylor's case. Shane doesn't want to talk to a lawyer this late at night, but Phoebe asks him to do it for mom. Shane relents, telling Phoebe that he's only doing this for her.

Hector and Storm discuss the case with Shane and Phoebe.
The trio joins Storm and Hector up at the house. Hector asks Storm if the DA intends to prosecute him or Phoebe for lying, or Shane for obstruction of justice. Throwing around some legal terms, Storm basically explains that it will depend on what comes out at the trial and what the verdict is. He turns to Phoebe and points out that she could be charged with perjury if she admits on the stand that she lied. Phoebe says she understands that, but she wants to testify for her mom's sake. In that case, Storm explains, their case will come down to Shane's testimony. He explains that he did a background check on Shane and... Shane gets worried that the attorney had him checked out, but Storm reminds him that the DA will do the same thing. Fortunately, he didn't find anything that the prosecutor could use against Shane other than the fact that he's living here in Taylor's home. He thinks ADA Tartaro might use that to suggest that Shane is testifying to repay Taylor for giving him a place to stay. Worried at how that sounds, Shane wonders if he should forget about testifying and head for San Francisco like he has planned. Harry wonders if Shane should go ahead and asks Storm if he could get a deposition from Shane. Storm explains that live testimony is stronger, plus Tartaro will want the chance to cross examine Shane. He asks Shane how he came to live here; Shane tells him about the accident with his hand, including how Phoebe convinced Taylor to let him stay here while he recovered. Storm thinks that will do in court.

Harry hopes Phoebe knows what she's doing.
Just as Phoebe tells Shane that he's not going anywhere; the phone rings. It's Taylor, on a really bad cell connection from jail. She tells Phoebe that she worried that something was wrong. Phoebe assures her mom that she's fine and tells her about their meeting with Storm. She assures Taylor that they all know what they have to do to help her. Off to the side, Shane talks with Harry; he thinks Harry is out of luck with Phoebe. Harry warns that he doesn't Shane much; Shane isn't worried and goes to bed. Once Shane goes up, Harry asks Phoebe if she knows what she's getting into with Shane; it's just until the trial, Phoebe assures him.

In ths hospital, Brooke and Nick wait while Dr. Hillman operates on Jackie. Nick asks Brooke if she needs to go, but she says she's here for him. Nick asks if she's here for him as a wife or as a friend. Brooke assures him that she's still his wife, and she's here for him. Nick thanks her and goes to take a walk. Nick and Brooke get news about Jackie.
In the hospital chapel, Nick turns to God. He knows he doesn't ask the Lord for much, but he pleads for God to let his mother live. He starts to remember happier times with his mother, but he is interrupted by Brooke coming to find him. Brooke tells him that Dr. Hillman is looking for him, so they go to talk to the surgeon, who is now out of the O.R. Dr. Hillman explains that the surgery went well, and they reduced the swelling caused by the bleeding. However, they still need to wait at least 24 hours to see if there is any "tissue death" - as in brain damage. Just then they hear Jackie mumble. The doctor quickly examines her and askes her a couple questions to evaluate her mental status. When she is a little slow responding to the doctor asking her for the first letter of Nick's name, Nick suggests they try something else. The doctor writes down the instructions "close your eyes" on some paper and is pleased when Jackie does as she's told. The doctor then takes out his wallet and asks what it is. It seems discouraging when Jackie starts to say, "No", but she then mutters "case" right after. Nick explains that she was saying "notecase", which is the British term for a wallet. Nick cries tears of joy that his mom has come back to them as Dr. Hillman and Brooke look on.
