Hector gets a visit from SURVIVOR winner Tom Westman.
|
Hector returns to the firehouse just in time to catch NYC fireman (and SURVIVOR: PALAU winner) Tom Westman leaving. Tom thanks Hector for making him welcome here; Hector's equally grateful for Tom showing them how the guys in Brooklyn do the job. Tom asks about the "child drowning" call Hector went on and asks if Hector knows the family. Hector explains that his daughter works for the family. He's pleased to report that the child is stable and is starting to regain consciousness. Tom bets the family is terrified. Hector says they are, since the mother hadn't upgraded her spa's safety features, while the uncle got distracted while watching the child. It's a good thing that Nick knew CPR, Hector says. Tom thinks any pool owner should learn. They're interrupted by a call from Eric; Hector excuses himself to talk to the child's grandfather, so Tom leaves. Hector then tells Eric that Hope is improving, but Brooke probably has her cell phone turned off.

Eric wonders if Jackie was right about Nick and Brooke.
|
Eric is with Jackie in her office at Jackie M as he thanks Hector for the update and ends the call. Jackie asks what's going on; she's thrilled to hear about Hope's condition and wonders if Nick knows. Eric tells her that Nick was with Brooke and Hope when Hector left. Jackie is glad to hear that: she knows Brooke had every right to be angry that Nick wasn't paying attention to Hope, but she's sure Brooke was just scared when she asked Nicky to leave the hospital. Eric sits down, takes her hand and tells her that the family needed some good news after postponing Bridget's wedding again and learning of Stephanie's deception. Jackie's sorry for causing him pain by exposing Stephanie, but he's glad to have his eyes opened by her and Brooke. But maybe it was wrong to storm into the wedding with their revelation, Jackie suggests. Eric tells her that it was Stephanie's idea to stop the wedding, possibly the only good decision Stephanie made during her fiasco. Jackie seems surprised, since he supported Nick and Bridget getting married. Eric admits that she may have been right about Nick and Brooke's feelings for each other, so he might have been better off listening to her warnings.
Jackie asks Eric what changed his mind. He admits that this whole scenario has made him examine his own feelings for Brooke, so he sees how that no man can get over her. Jackie asks if this means he still loves Brooke. His feelings don't matter, he says; what matters is that Bridget has always been in Brooke's shadow, and he fears she might be again if she doesn't confront Nick's feelings for Brooke. He just wishes he didn't have to go on a trip to Chicago right now, which is why he wants Jackie to keep an eye on Bridget. He thinks Brooke is too preoccupied to do it, and he certainly can't ask Stephanie. Then there's Dante, but Eric really doesn't know him well. Jackie laments that her son caused this, but Eric says this started before she and Nick came to L.A. In fact, he wonders if he's to blame, for asking Bridget to forgive Brooke for what happened with Deacon. He fears he put Brooke before his own daughter in doing so, and he fears Nick is doing the same thing. Jackie points out that Nick needs to be at the hospital, as he feels guilty about Hope's accident. Eric agrees, but he also hopes Nick can avoid the temptation to play "knight in shining armor" to Brooke, since that could send Bridget over the edge.

Bridget is freaked out by what she hears.
|
At the hospital, Bridget continues to watch Brooke and Nick hug through the window in the door to Hope's room. Nick and Brooke break their embrace and talk about how grateful they are that Hope is getting better. Dr. Sobel is on his way in and asks Bridget if he should let Brooke and Nick know she's there, but she says she can wait for them to come out. The doctor enters and is encouraged by the fact that Hope is awake and remembers what happened before the accident; while he hasn't seen the MRI results, he is confident that Hope will be fine with medication and monitoring. Brooke and Nick thank the doctor, who gives them some time alone. Outside, Bridget holds the door slightly ajar and listens to Nick apologize to Brooke again. Brooke reminds him that Hope is OK. But they almost lost her, Nick says, and to deal with the fact that it was his fault if she'd died would have made him feel dead inside. That's why he's promising, from this day forward, to never let anything happen to Brooke or Hope ever again. Bridget cries as she hears Nick say that he means that with all his heart.
Dr. Sobel comes back to do some eye coordination tests; he's very encouraged by the results, although he wants to run some more tests when Hope is stronger. Nick thanks the doctor, who leaves again. Brooke tells Nick that she wants to make some calls to let everyone know about Hope, but Nick offers to do that for her so she can stay with Hope. He goes out to the waiting room and sees Bridget there. He tells her about Hope, but she tells him that Hector already told her. Nick tells her how afraid he was when he saw Hope underwater and pulled her out. Brooke was so upset that she asked him to leave, so he went to the chapel to pray. That's where he was when Brooke told him that Hope was asking for him and brought him back to the room. He thinks about how a tragedy like this could pull a family part. Or bring them together, Bridget says. He tells her that he has to make some calls for her mom and suggests she go see Hope in the meantime. He kisses her on the forehead and walks away. Bridget stands alone in the hallway, breathing heavily as she tells herself that she has to stop doing this to herself. Nick was just being overprotective, she tells herself, but she keeps thinking back to her mother hugging Nick earlier. It's just in her head, she tells herself.

Brooke and Nick bond by Hope's bedside.
|
When Nick returns to the room, he asks Brooke if Bridget came in. He's surprised that she didn't. Brooke guesses that she had to do rounds. Nick thinks that's not like Bridget in a family emergency. But the doctor said Hope may be out of the woods, Brooke reminds him. Nick says he knows. Brooke says she wouldn't have forgiven herself if anything had happened to Hope, but Nick thinks he's the one who should feel guilty. Brooke reminds him that she didn't have the spa checked. But she couldn't have guessed that would cause problems, Nick says, but he's the one who wasn't watching Hope when he should have been. But he also saved Hope by giving her CPR, Brooke reminds him. She doesn't want to blame anyone. She just wants to focus on the fact that her little girl is OK and get her home, so they can focus on the future. She asks Nick if they can do that; they hug again. Outside, Bridget watches, breathing heavily as she keeps telling herself that Nick loves her. She looks at her ring and remembers his proposal, and she cries.

Hope seems to be getting back to normal.
|
Inside, Nick plays with Hope and a stuffed green monkey. Brooke worries that he's tiring Hope out, but Hope says she's not tired. See, Nick says. Brooke reminds him that the doctor wasn't sure how Hope's cognitive functions are, so Nick suggests they do some counting; he and Brooke are ecstatic when Hope counts from one to ten without missing a number. They both lean in to kiss Hope. Outside, Bridget still watches. She recalls Eric asking her if Nick is the kind of man she wants to marry. She then recalls Jackie telling her that Nick is still in love with Brooke. Next, she thinks back to the night she found Brooke on the Shady Marlin after Ridge, recovering from his concussion, accused Nick of raping Brooke in Puerto Vista. Brooke asked Nick if he still loved her. He said he always will. Finally, she thinks back to the recent night when she found Nick lying in Brooke's bed with Brooke and Hope (it was the night Hope couldn't sleep, after Brooke moved back to her house). Nick thanked Brooke for giving him some of the best times of his life - but later, he told Bridget that he loved her and always will. Bridget looks back in the room and sees her mom and Nick holding hands. Eric's, Jackie's and Brooke's words from those memories echo in Bridget's head, ending with the memory of Nick telling Brooke that he'd always love her.
The show ends with a public service announcement. Hector says that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children between the ages of 1 and 4. Tom Westman then says, "Learn about important water safety tips for all children at www.SafeKids.org; it could save a life."
