Catherine watches Hector examine the spa.
At Brooke's mansion, Catherine watches as Hector looks over the drained jacuzzi, trying to find out what happened to Hope. She asks the fireman if he needs anything, but he says he's almost finished. Catherine wonders how this could have happened, since Hope swims well for her age. Hector holds up the drain cover, clogged with hair, and says this would explain it.

Brooke tells Dr. Sobel that Hope squeezed her hand.
At the hospital, Nick watches through the window as Brooke asks Hope to squeeze her hand again. Hope does. Brooke asks Hope to open her eyes, but she doesn't respond. As Brooke says that it's OK and tells Hope to rest, Nick asks a nurse to call the doctor to Hope's room. Soon after, Dr. Sobel arrives. Brooke tells him that Hope squeezed her hand. It could be involuntary, the doctor says. Brooke still thinks it's a good sign. The doctor says he'll know more once he examines Hope, so Brooke steps outside to let him do that, brushing past Nick. Nick follows and tells her that she's right, it is a good sign. She just stares at him and reminds him that Hope is in that bed because of him. Nick agrees, and it kills him to think about that. Brooke doesn't care: she can't stand to see him or even hear his voice. He doesn't think she should be alone; she shouldn't even be here, she angrily retorts, demanding to know how he could ruin her daughter's life this way. Nick urges her to believe that Hope will pull through. She wants to, but she's not sure if she can. Hector approaches just as Nick tells Brooke that he wishes he could trade places with Hope, who is like a daughter to him. He promises to get Hope whatever she needs. If Hope is scarred by this, Brooke tells Nick, she'll be reminded that he was responsible whenever she looks at him. She doesn't want him near Hope, not now and not ever! She then goes back in the room.

Brooke asks Dr. Sobel how Hope is. He says that there's been no more movement, but her breathing seems normal. and he's seen increased neuromuscular responses and eye activity. He thinks that's encouraging and tells Brooke that he'll check back soon. Brooke thanks God. The nurse tells Brooke to call if Hope responds in any way; Brooke says she will. She then returns to Hope's bedside and tells Hope that she needs her, as do Bridget, RJ and Catherine; that's why they all want her to fight to come back to them. Hector comes in and asks how Hope is. Brooke tells him that Hope squeezed her hand twice, but she still hasn't opened her eyes. It's still positive, Hector says. Brooke says that she heard he was the one who answered the call. Yes, he says, from Nick. He knows she's worried right now, but he thinks Hope has everything she needs to pull through. Brooke just wishes she hadn't left Hope in Nick's care, lamenting that Nick wasn't even watching. Hector says that he knows how she feels, and he agrees that Nick should have been paying closer to attention to Hope. However, he thinks she needs to know that he took a look at her spa, and it was an accident waiting to happen.

Hector offers some advice to Brooke.
Brooke asks Hector what he means. He explains that her spa only has one drain, and the cover was broken. So it's no wonder that Hope's hair got caught up in the cover, blocking the drain and pulling Hope underwater. There are precautions she can take, he explains: while nothing can replace adult supervision, he advises her to have Hope, or anyone else with long hair, wear a bathing cap. In addition, she should get a vacuum release to break the vacuum if the drain gets clogged, or better yet, get a second drain to alleviate the suction. Brooke says she had no idea, although she admits she should have checked the spa when she moved back in. She asks herself what she did to her little girl.

Jackie tells Nick not to blame himself.
Nick goes to the hospital chapel, where he relives the moments leading up to and following the accident in his mind. He then recalls Brooke saying that he did this to Hope. Jackie comes in and sits next to him; she says she got his message, but it was hard to understand. He tells his mother what happened: Hope got pulled underwater in the jacuzzi when he lost sight of her, and even though he got her out and did CPR, they had to bring her here. It's all his fault, he laments. But he saved Hope, she reminds him. Even so, he points out, Hope still might not be able to walk or talk or laugh again, because of him! Jackie tells him it was an accident, so he can't blame himself. That's no excuse, he says. He thinks about how much Hope has been let down lately, and now along comes Uncle Nick, her big hero, and he lets her down more than anybody! Jackie tells him to stop talking that way and go to Hope's side, where he belongs. He tells her that Brooke doesn't want him anywhere near Hope. Jackie thinks Brooke is just frightened and tells him that Brooke and Hope need him now more than ever. She's sure things will be fine once the crisis passes. What if it doesn't? he asks. What if there's brain damage, paralysis, or more seizures like the two she had in the ambulance? He thinks this proves he's not cut out to be a parent. Jackie agrees and tells him to pray for Hope, and she offers to stay here and pray with him. After all, that's why he came down here. Nick asks God to send that little angel back to Brooke as Jackie holds his hand.

Hope says the word "Mommy."
Back in Hope's room, Brooke laments that she did this to Hope. She didn't know better, Hector says: now she does. He also thinks that Nick should have been watching Hope more carefully, but he thinks Brooke needs to focus on helping Hope right now. They need Hope to get better, so she knows they're protecting her the next time she goes swimming. Brooke tells Hope she didn't know she was putting her in danger; she's so sorry and promises to make sure that nothing ever hurts Hope ever again. She tells Hope to be strong and fight, and to remember that Mommy loves her. They need her to come back to them, Brooke pleads. Just then, Hope moans and tries to say "Mommy." Brooke cries and tells her that yes, Mommy is right here for her.
